Corrosion is the whole subject, and it is structural: longitudinals, battery box, floors, sills, suspension mounting points. A 356 is judged from underneath, on a lift, before anything else.
Body authenticity decides value. A genuine Speedster and a coupé-based replica are not in the same market — the gap runs into the hundreds of thousands.
Matching numbers: engine, gearbox, chassis. The factory Certificate of Authenticity is the only document that settles it.
1980s–90s restorations: filler, patch panels, wrong shade. A badly done old restoration costs more to undo than an honest tired original.
