What to check on a 944

Generation-level points, not observations about this car. Only a pre-purchase inspection speaks for the individual car. MODEL KNOWLEDGE

Timing belt AND balance-shaft belt: interference engine. A jumped belt destroys it. The interval and the invoice outrank everything else.
Water pump: replaced with the belts, never after.
Clutch: transaxle out. Budget the invoice at purchase, not six months later.
Torque tube bearings: vibration at certain speeds, heavy repair.
Turbo (951): intercooler hoses, boost pressure, turbo condition. A neglected 951 costs more than a healthy 944 S2.
1985.5 model year: new dashboard. The market distinguishes the two interiors.
