What to check on a 911 (1965-1989)

Generation-level points, not observations about this car. Only a pre-purchase inspection speaks for the individual car. MODEL KNOWLEDGE

Corrosion: kidney bowls, windscreen surround, floors, rear arches. Pre-1976 cars have no galvanised steel.
1974–1977 2.7 magnesium-case engines: head studs pull. Many have been rebuilt with Time-Sert or Raceware inserts — an accepted repair, but it must be documented.
Pre-1984 chain tensioners fail. The upgrade to Carrera 3.2 tensioners is standard practice, and its absence is a signal.
Gearbox: the 915 (to 1986) needs a practised hand; the G50 (1987–89) is better and costs more. Not a detail — a fault line in the market.
The 3.2 Carrera (1984–89) is the most robust of the line, and also the one with the widest spread in asking prices. Condition, not model year, sets the price.
