What to check on this generation

• Corrosion: kidney bowls, windscreen surround, floors, rear arches. Pre-1976 cars have no galvanised steel.
• 1974–1977 2.7 magnesium-case engines: head studs pull. Many have been rebuilt with Time-Sert or Raceware inserts — an accepted repair, but it must be documented.
• Pre-1984 chain tensioners fail. The upgrade to Carrera 3.2 tensioners is standard practice, and its absence is a signal.
• Gearbox: the 915 (to 1986) needs a practised hand; the G50 (1987–89) is better and costs more. Not a detail — a fault line in the market.
• The 3.2 Carrera (1984–89) is the most robust of the line, and also the one with the widest spread in asking prices. Condition, not model year, sets the price.
