1997–2005. The first water-cooled 911, and the cheapest entry into the line. The 996.1 (to model year 2001) and the 996.2 (2002 on, revised headlights, 3.6) do not hold value alike. The Turbo and GT3 use the Mezger engine, unrelated to the Carrera's M96.

IMS bearing on M96-engined Carreras. A preventive replacement is documented and rewarded by the market: ask for the invoice, not the seller's word.
Bore scoring, particularly on 3.6 engines: check with a borescope. This should be routine before any purchase.
Rear main seal: frequent weeping, to be distinguished from a real leak.
Cracked coolant expansion tank; blocked cowl drains (water damage to the cabin and the ECU).
Turbo and GT3: Mezger engine, no IMS. Confusing the two mechanical families is the most common error on this model.
